Little Women Costume Ideas

It’s costume time! While there are a lot of costumes being provided there are some people that will have to be creative I’ve included my pinterest board which contains more authentic images. Underneath that are characters who need costumes and some ideas for finding them. I used search terms like victorian girl, civil war ball gown, victorian ball gown, etc.

Female Dancers: You need some sort of puffy dress. Try ebay or thrift stores for a floor length ball gown. I searched ebay for 80s prom dresses and found some good options.

  • Such as this:
  • Or this without the apron

Little Girls: Try to find some sort of old fashioned looking dress. If it has a full, bell shaped skirt all the better.

  • Something like this (more expensive)
  • Or this without the bonnet

Shoes should be black.

  • Children wear mary jane type shoes, no heal
  • Women wear character shoes
  • Men wear dress shoes (oxfords and loafers)

Children hair should be ringlets or braids.

Women’s hair should be up. There are examples on the pinterest board. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

Beauty and the Beast Costumes

We rented most of the enchanted costumes, yay! Villagers and some other characters will need to supply their own costumes. We spent one rehearsal looking through the drama club costume closet and gave out what we had.

Take a close look at this spreadsheet to see what costumes each character has to supply and what costumes are taken care of. I’ve also include some examples of what different costumes types should look like. Be creative, go to consignment stores or thrift stores. I often find things on Amazon and ebay too.

Lastly, you will see the spreadsheet also has a tab that shows what everyone signed up for to help with the production. I will be emailing parents this week to hand off the various tasks. Thank you so very very much for all your help. I am always available if you have questions.

Because the show is a fairy tale the costumes should be colorful and fun. The style can be loosely based on the Renaissance through the Victorian period. It’s a long stretch of time and I’m not too particular. If you are uncertain you can always email a picture to me.

Boots are not necessary. If a male character chooses to wear actual breeches instead of pants and doesn’t want to wear boots they should wear knee high socks. The costume can be more colorful than this.

Colorful and fun. Be creative when putting together this look. Hailey is wearing a long blue chemise with a bodice over dress. Both are from ebay. Emily is wearing a peasant skirt from amazon, a peasant blouse that we made a few years ago and a corset bodice. The corset bodice can easily be mimicked with a vest or waist cincher.

Oklahoma! Costumes

I just wanted to get some costume ideas out there before Easter break. I have a Pinterest board started and will continue to add to it. Here are the basic guidelines for each character type.

Here is a great ebay store to get period costumes.

  1. Farmers: Everything should be either mens or boys cuts. Long sleeve button down shirt in bright colors but no patterns, overalls and boots. Boots can be any type as long as they aren’t combat boots or anything modern looking.
  2. Cowboys: Everything should be either mens or boys cuts. Long sleeve button down shirt in plaids or checks. Pants that will fit over a boot. You may choose to wear suspenders or vests but you don’t have to. You may also chose to wear a cowboy hat as long as it is mens/boys. Cowboy boots.
  3. Female characters: Think prairie dresses right before the turn of the century. They would have wide skirts with petticoats. You can be as authentic as you like or fake it till you make it. You may choose to wear a dress or a blouse and skirt combo. You must wear stockings/tights and victorian type boots. You can find some on amazon in the $30-$40 range or try ebay.
  4. Laurey, Aunt Eller, Ado Annie, and Gertie: please provide your own stockings and shoes.
  5. Peddler: please provide your own boots.
  6. Dream Ballet Girls: You need to get pink ballet shoes.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Costume Details

Hello everyone. I know some of you are concerned about hair and makeup. I’ve put together some Pinterest boards to help you figure out what you want to do. I don’t mind detailed hair on the god and Muses but don’t expect to start from scratch when you are getting ready at school. If you want your hair to be curled you need to come with it curled. As for makeup you can have a lot of fun going all out 80’s. Muses and gods can do shimmer and sparkles but not extreme 80’s.

Xanadu Costumes

Alright, it’s time to start thinking Costumes. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the various types of costumes. I am going to list by character type or specific characters and say what you need to provide and what we have or will make/purchase for a character. Please email me if you have any questions.

Clio/Kira: We will provide both costumes. You will need black jazz shoes.
Sonny Malone: Let’s talk and see what we can figure out.
Danny: A suit. If the costume closet has one that fits we can use that otherwise you will need to provide.

Muses: Please provide a tasteful lyrical dance dress (or something creatively similar) in the color next to your character name. Dresses should not have short skirts. Some examples can be found at the following links. You can order one of these, use one you may have or find one that you like better. Depending on what you find you may need to also wear a leotard/tights. I certainly don’t mind creativity but I don’t want anything too elaborate. The color should be the part that stands out. You will need black jazz shoes
This one’s ok but I would prefer a dress that isn’t a halter Perhaps with a bolero sweater
A print is fine as long as it fits with the theme
Good example
Try to keep the color in the jewel tone range. I want to avoid pastels.
Erato: yellow
Urania: royal blue
Polyhymnia: aqua
Euterpe: pink
Melpomene: purple
Thalia: orange
Terpsichore: white
Calliope: green

Andrew Sisters: I am looking for matching costumes so stay tuned for the final decision.

The Tubes: All black. You can wear anything a bit punk rock as long as there are not logos or prints. Black pants, black skirt, black t-shirt or black tank top (no skinny straps) and a funky printed bandana. I suggest trying thrift shops.

All Greek Gods: We will make bed sheet togas. You will need a white t-shirt for male characters and a white tank top (no skinny straps) for female characters, a white bed sheet and either white pants for male characters or white leggings for female characters. You will also need gold sandals. I will provide accents.

Medusa: A Black bedsheet, black leggings, and black tank top (no skinny straps) I will make your wig and provide accents.
Centaur: White t-shirt and white pants/leggings. I will make your horse legs.
Cyclops: Brown pants and brown long sleeved t-shirt. I will provide the mask.
Hermes: White t-shirt, white pants, white bed sheet. Gold sandals to attach gold wings to. I will find a winged helmet.

Sirens: I am looking for matching dresses for you. I will let you know ASAP if we need to go in another directions. Black Jazz shoes.

Greek Chorus: I want you to be creative and think 80’s. I just ask that you keep the colors in a pastel range. The Greek Chorus should contrast with most of the other characters so you stand out. I have put together a Pinterest board with clothing and color ideas.
